Week 15 Results [FINAL]
Sunday, April 21, 2013 10:12:29 PM EDT
If you’re not named Bread Snorter, then you’re a loser.
Bread Snorter dropped 20.8 lb (10.2%) in total to win this year’s competition. Cher Jonc En finished in second place, after a strong showing the last two weeks. Meal Urge Maniac finishes in 3rd place.
I will add more information about the end of the contest in the next few days.
The BFLG Buffet is tentatively schedule for May 10, for those interested.
[Update: 2013-05-03 9:41 PM]
The final results are now posted. Although some stopped weighing in weeks ago, I’ll use the numbers as if they had continued to weigh in, and completely ignore their presumed massive weight gain during the contest.
As a group, we went from an average weight of 209.9 lb to 204.6 lb, so congratulate yourself for an average 5.3 lb weight loss (2.6%). For comparison, we lost 5.2 lb (2.4%) in 2012; 6.9 lb (2.9%) in 2011; 5.9 lb (3.1%) in 2010; 5.5 lb (2.9%) in 2009; and 9.5 lb (4.5%) in 2007.
Basically, we were only serious about this contest our first year in 2007.
Bread Snorter dropped the most weight (20.8 lb) and percentage (10.2%).
Fat Bun Fair I gained the most weight of 5.2 lb (2.2%), and I’m pretty sure he didn’t even try all that hard to gain it.
Dang Bro Zen Rho had the lowest BMI at 21.7, with Tidal Dwarves right behind at 21.9. The highest BMI went to Jerky Creg at 36.4, followed by Mad Urea Owner at 34.1. As a group, our BMI was 28.2, still above the “normal” range of 18.5–24.9. Nine of us are finished in this normal range.
Meal Urge Maniac was the only one to lose weight each week. Fat Bun Fair I and Hi I Socialise were both over their original weight for 14 of the 15 weeks. I Hum Barroom Voice was over for 13 weeks.
Highest final weight was Jerky Creg at 253.8 lb, and lowest final weight was Meal Urge Maniac at 135.8 lb.
Nu Owns Shag Van set a record of sorts by weighing in only one time, while No Crook missed only twice. As a result, I am considering renaming the “Cook Rule” to the “Shag Rule.” Or not.
I hope some of you who lost weight are able to maintain it for the next contest. Here’s a hint: according to research, regular exercise is necessary just to maintain weight loss.
Keep doing something, and hopefully you can start the next diet contest with a bonus.
Week 14 Results

For those that are actually trying to lose weight, this will be one of the most exciting finishes yet. There are four BFLGs that have a chance to win the whole enchilada. with a side of guacamole. And maybe some tortilla chips and spicy salsa.
Bread Snorter has a tenuous lead over Cher Jonc En and Joy Ad Ogler. Meal Urge Maniac is still within striking distance at 4th place.
Surprisingly, there are only 5 BFLGs that have gained weight in the contest. A few have stopped weighing in, however, so this number could theoretically be higher.
The five that have gained weight are: Fat Bun Fair I, Knock Nerd Bye, Minus Slim Avatar, I Hum Barroom Vice, and Hi I Socialise. If you’re not one of these five, then congratulate yourself for having lost some weight (if you can keep it up for one more week). However, for some, the effort put forth to lose weight was based on what pair of socks they put on for the weigh-in.
Next week is the last weigh-in.
Week 13 Results

Bread Snorter is not done. After taking over 2nd place, he’s now stormed into 1st place. And he has this look of someone who likes it there and is not going to leave. Like a transient. Meal Urge Maniac is back in 2nd place, and Joy Ad Ogler, who’s probably just pacing himself for a big push these last two weeks, is biding his time in 3rd place.
Five BFLGs have lost at least 11.2 lb or higher, with Joy Ad Ogler losing the most at 25.2 lb. So far, three BFLGs have met their loss goal (Bread Snorter, Joy Ad Ogler, and No Crook), with 3 more above 80% of their weight-loss goal.
The top three for percent weight loss are: Joy Ad Ogler (9.6%), Bread Snorter (8.4%), and Dang Bro Zen Rho (7.3%).
Only 2 more weigh-ins left.
Week 12 Results

It’s a New World Order now. Bread Snorter has snuck into second place behind Joy Ad Ogler. Meal Urge Maniac drops into third place. This is apparently the only news worthy event for the contest, everything else is irrelevant.
Only 3 more weigh-ins left.
Week 11 Results
Tuesday, March 26, 2013 6:23:45 PM EDT
Well, there’s not much change in the top order this week (Joy Ad Ogler, Meal Urge Maniac, Bread Snorter), but they are bunched up closer together for the final stretch to the finish.
There are quite a few BFLGs above the Average mark that have done pretty well so far. The weight loss for this group above the average is 156.2 lb, or about 10.4 lb per person. It’s certainly not easy to sustain weight loss of about a pound a week for 11 weeks, which this group has been able to do. Kudos.
For those that haven’t done as well, this is apparently the secret: eat less, exercise more, repeat.
You may not have tried this method yet, but I’m pretty confident that if you do, you’ll get results. Or not.
This week is a short week, so I will remind you to weigh in on Thursday, March 28. Happy Easter. Take it easy on the chocolate bunnies.
Week 10 Results
Wednesday, March 20, 2013 9:58:39 PM EDT
I would describe many BFLGs as stumbling towards the finish line, but that would imply that they are actually heading towards it. It’s probably more accurate to say that some of us have already bellied-up to the pie bar waiting for this diet contest to end.
For those still trying, Joy Ad Ogler is still our leader, as he has been for the past four weeks, followed again by Meal Urge Maniac. In third place is still Bread Snorter.
There are 4 people who have lost more than 10 lb: Joy Ad Ogler (23.6 lb), Big Human Lap (15.2 lb), Evil Like Horn (13.4 lb), and Bread Snorter (12.4 lb). Our current average is 204.6 lb. With the starting average weight of 209.9 lb, that means we’ve all lost on average 5.3 lb after 10 weeks, with some more average than others.
I would normally list those at the bottom of the list, but there’s so many that with a score of less than 1.0 that I hope their numbers were good if they had scheduled a biometric screening this week.
Week 9 Results
Sunday, March 10, 2013 3:48:43 PM EDT
I apparently jinxed a number of BFLGs last week by mentioning that they had lost weight every week, causing them to gain weight this week. Therefore I will instead use my power for good instead of evil by listing those who are above their starting weigh-in: Fat Bun Fair I, Starchiest Hen Pork, Hi I Socialize, Minus Slim Avatar, I Hum Barroom Vice, and Knock Nerd Bye.
Our leader is still Joy Ad Ogler, even though he was one of those I jinxed. He stays ahead of Meal Urge Maniac on the strength of losing the most weight so far, 23.6 lb. In third place this week is Bread Snorter, who may be trying the “lose 5% of muscle mass every decade after the age of 35-years-old” diet. He’s apparently very, very patient.
The heaviest BFLGs are Mad Urea Owner and Jerky Creg, both at 249.2 lb. The lightest are Meal Urge Maniac at 138.4 lb and Dang Bro Zen Rho at 147 lb. The closest to average this week is Thy Error Bites at 202.6 lb.
The biggest climber this week is Jack Fry Revs Fee, who went up 7 places. The biggest dropper is Knock Nerd Bye who fell 7 places. Luckily, they have avoided colliding into and annihilating each other this week.
Knock Nerd Bye joins our perpetual cellar dwellers Torn Men Rev Clan and Nu Owns Shag Van down at the bottom of the list.
Six more weigh-ins left.
Week 8 Results
Tuesday, March 5, 2013 8:05:28 PM EST
There’s a bit of a change at the top. Joy Ad Ogler is still on top with a strong lead followed by Meal Urge Maniac, but No Crook is now in third place for some reason (see what happens when you actually show up for weigh-ins?).
The following have lost weight every week: Joy Ad Ogler, Meal Urge Maniac, No Crook, Big Human Lap, Cher Jonc En, Evil Like Horn, and Jerky Creg (sorry to Dang Bro Zen Rho, Bread Snorter, Whackier Taro Owl, Amok Red Zinger, Hide Hen Ha, and Papa Needs Elk Run, who missed this accomplishment by one weigh-in). Not surprisingly, most on this list are doing well.
Technically No Owns Shag Van and Torn Men Rev Clan fall in these categories as well, but without proof of life, I won’t include them in the list.
Unsurprisingly Joy Ad Ogler has lost the most weight based on percentage (-9.3%), followed by No Crook (-6.1%) and Big Human Lap (-5.5%). Starchiest Hen Pork has gained the most weight (+1.8%) because, well, Starchiest Hen Pork.
Mad Urea Owner has gone up 10 places and Papa Needs Elk Run 7 places because they actually lost weight.
Spectacular swan dives of the week belong to Team Fool Ambush (11 places), and Dang Bro Zen Rho (7 places), who barely stayed in the top ten.
That leaves us with the laggards-of-the-week: I Hum Barroom Vice, Nu Owns Shag Van, and Torn Men Rev Clan holding down the bottom.
We’re just past the midway point in our contest. There are only 7 more weigh-ins.
Week 7 Results
Tuesday, February 26, 2013 6:18:42 PM EST
As we approach the midpoint of the contest, the we can see the typical BFLG patterns manifesting themselves. There are at least four BFLGs that are serious/trying/inflicted-with-a-wasting-disease: Joy Ad Ogler, Meal Urge Maniac, Dang Bro Zen Rho, and No Crook.
Joy Ad Ogler still leads our contest, showing that losing weight is as easy as pie a piece of cake
about discipline and hard work.
There is the large chunk of BFLGs that fall in the “at least making an effort” category: Bread Snorter, Big Human Lap, Evil Like Horn, Cher John En, Whackier Taro Owl, Graven Crab Oath, Amok Red Zinger, Mill At Dell Clench, Hide Hen Ha, and My Shaken Ton.
The rest are in the contest so they can go to the all-you-can-eat buffet at the end.
Special mention goes to Starchiest Hen Pork, Fat Bun Fair I, and I Hum Barroom Vice whose weigh-ins have generally been higher than their starting weight. Such consistency in a diet contest deserves commendation.
BFLG is paging contestants Nu Owns Shag Van and Torn Men Rev Clan. Please see the courtesy scale on the lower level.
(I’m assuming their strenuous workout routines have made them so weak that they may have passed out under their desk. If you walk by their area, please check to see if there are emaciated bodies lying on the floor. If you do, please put a sticky note on them in case housekeeping does their bi-decadal vacuuming.)
Week 6 Results
Monday, February 18, 2013 1:07:58 PM EST
The week 6 weigh-in was disrupted by Nemo the Big Flake, who dumped a few inches of Slippery to make driving annoying. That resulted in a light turnout on Friday, with some followups on Monday.
Or maybe it was just because it was Friday.
The top three places are the same people, in different order. This week Joy Ad Ogler has a commanding lead over Meal Urge Maniac, who has a slim lead over Dang Bro Zen Rho.
Up to this point, we have lost an accumulated 155.6 lb, which is more than either Meal Urge Maniac, Dang Bro Zen Rho, or Tidal Dwarves. We will need to drop around another 42 lb to lose Larded Swivels, and almost 100 lb to lose Big Human Lap.
Down at the very (very) bottom are Jack Fry Revs Free, Minus Slim Avatar, and Torn Men Rev Clan.
Week 5 Results

No updates this week.
Week 4 Results
Monday, February 4, 2013 11:30:59 PM EST
We have a new leader. All hail Joy Ad Ogler, who has already dropped 15 lb, the equivalent of losing a bowling bowl. He is apparently using the latest fad diet of Eating Less and Exercising More. Dang Bro Zen Rho, whose full name is actually a haiku in anagram form, has fallen to second place. Mega Urge Maniac is third and contemplating algorithm changes to vault him to the top.
The biggest climbers are Minus Slim Avatar (+12 places), Knock Nerd Bye (+10), and No Crook (+10). The biggest droppers are Tidal Dwarves (-12 places), Covets Tents (-10), and I Hum Barroom Vice (-9).
The lightest BFLG is Meal Urge Maniac at 141.6 lb, and the heaviest is Mad Urea Owner at 260.4 lb. The one closest to the average is Starchiest Hen Pork at 206.2 lb.
Finally, down at the bottom of the pile are Rink Arm Fell, Fat Bun Fair I, and Torn Men Rev Clan. That fact that two of these BFLGers are Canadian is probably not relevant. Coincidentally, the NHL is playing hockey again, and the stolen maple syrup from the Canadian Strategic Maple Syrup Reserve was recovered last fall, news that brought general happiness to all of Canada.
Week 3 Results
Friday, January 25, 2013 6:39:47 PM EST
Dang Bro Zen Rho apparently still has meat on his bones. The skinniest BFLG (based on BMI) is maintaining his lead over Meal Urge Maniac. Graven Crab Oath has moved up 6 places to take third place. Just behind is Joy Ad Ogler, who is still in fourth position.
The biggest climber of the week is Team Fool Ambush, jumping up 11 places to tenth place. Larded Swivels dropped 16 places and My Shaken Ton dropped 15 places.
Interestingly, there are 7 BFLGs with BMIs under 25. What’s surprising is not the fact that this is the most ever, but that it comes at the third week, and that the top 3 places are all under 25. I don’t know the relevancy of all this.
Finally, way, way, way down at the bottom are 5 BFLGs with a score of 0. That means they have not changed their weight from their initial weigh-in. These are: Torn Men Rev Clan, Starchiest Hen Pork, Jack Fry Revs Free, Knock Nerd Bye, and Minus Slim Avatar.
Week 2 Results
Saturday, January 19, 2013 12:25:18 AM EST
All hail Dang Bro Zen Rho, our two-week leader, and the skinniest BFLG contestant, based on BMI (21.9). If he maintains his current pace and just lets his muscles atrophy, he is projected to be a 99.7 lb weakling. He also has the highest percent loss at 3.9%. In second place is Meal Urge Maniac who is working the BFLG algorithm hard. Evil Like Horn lurks in third place and has lost the most absolute weight (8.2 lb). Joy Ad Ogler has lost 7.6 lb, the second most weight loss.
On the other hand, I Hum Barroom Vice has gained the most weight at 2.8 lb. Fat Bun Fair I has the highest positive correlation at +0.997, which is on pace to gain almost 17 lb.
As a final remark for the week, please note that the closer you are to your original weight, the fewer points you will receive. To get any points, you have to change. Do something. Overcome inertia. Move from center. Get off the couch.
Week 1 Results
Wednesday, January 16, 2013 8:26:10 AM EST
The first week has come and gone, and most BFLGs (29) have actually lost weight. Four people have actually gained weight. In the interest of public shaming, these are: Rink Arm Fell, Wager Arm Inn, Fat Bun Fair I, and Tidal Dwarves.
Our current leader is Dang Bro Zen Rho followed by Thy Error Bites and Mad Urea Owner. I won’t mention the three at the bottom of the list yet as two of them have not weighed-in.
As a whole (not as in donut hole), we have lost 48.1 lb so far. Four people (Dang Bro Zen Rho, Mystic Leach Jar, Tidal Dwarves, and Radon Ebbs) all have BMIs under 25, which is good. Dang Bro Zen Rho, our current leader, has the lowest BMI at 22,2.
The Few, The Round, the BFLGs
Monday, January 7, 2013 5:54:56 PM EST
This year’s contest has a total of 36 BFLG participants (although only 32 weighed in so far), many of whom apparently had very enjoyable holidays.
For those new to the contest, we will have a weigh-in every Friday (±1 business day) until April 19, 2013. You have to pretend to lose weight for at least the first 2 or 3 weeks.
For those who have done this before, you can stop pretending to lose weight immediately.
Right off the bat Meal Urge Maniac and Mad Urea Owner have taken a big lead due to bonus points. Losing weight after the end of the diet contest has a benefit.
I will probably be traveling regularly during this diet contest (like this Friday). I will try to have the weigh-in sheet prepared every Friday. Just fill in your weight. If I forget, please send me your weight by Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, Orkut, Yammer, LinkedIn, Diaspora, MySpace, ConNext, or VampireFreaks.
Just kidding. I never look at my Google+ account. Please send it by e-mail instead.
Weekly results will be posted here along with the main position table. Clicking on your anagram name will show a graph of your status so far.

Finally, here is the participant list with anagrams. Let the mocking begin.
It’s That Time Again
Friday, December 14, 2012 3:33:33 PM EST
In case the world still exists after the end of the Mayan calendar (December 21, 2012), then we will unfortunately still have the BFLG Diet Contest, 2013 Edition.
The contest rules will be the same as in previous years. The initial weigh-in will be on Monday, January 7, 2013. The first weekly weigh-in will be on Friday, January 11, 2013. I know most people like to diet only for the first 2-3 weeks of this contest, but I will collect weigh-in data until April 19, 2013 (15 weeks).
Finally, the ABH-North scale is moving from upstairs to downstairs, to cubicle A1016 (southeast corner).
If you know that you will be joining the contest, please let me know ahead of time so I can start filling out the worksheet.
For a reminder of the rules, please see the link below. So until then, good luck and good eatin’.
http://mr-eman.homeftp.org/~diet/2013/rules_2013.html
(Feel freel to pass this on to others that may make you say, “dude, you need to go on a diet contest.” They’ll appreciate the sentiment.)
Rules
Friday, December 14, 2012 3:31:21 PM EST
- The contest will start on Monday, January 7, 2013 with the initial weigh-in, height, and weight goal. Each Friday morning after that will be a weigh-in day until April 19, 2013 (15 weeks).
- Each location (Auburn Hills North and South) will have an official weigh-in scale. Weigh-in is done with
shoes off, pockets empty. Clothing is optional, but highly recommended.
If you cannot weigh in on Friday, please make arrangements with the person in charge of the scale at your facility. In Auburn Hills South, please see Andreas Knueppel. In Auburn Hills North, please see Emmanuel Garcia (A1016). - Weights will be published on a website using an anagram of the participant's name. A participant may select an anagram, or an anagram will be chosen for the participant.
- Taunting is allowed, and sometimes encouraged. Complaining about the scale is tolerated, but fruitless. It is not broken.
- Cook Rule: There can be a total of 2 missed weeks that will be interpolated. At the third missed weigh-in, the previous week will be used. If 3 or more consecutive weeks are missed, then I will invoke mystical weight loss contest algorithms to make something up.
- Bonus points will be given if your starting weight is lower than either your starting or ending weight
from the last diet contest, if you lost weight in the last contest. If your weight is lower than the previous
starting weight, you will get 25% credit for that weight loss. If it is lower than your final weight, you get an
additional 50% credit for being below that weight.
For those engineers without reading comprehension, this can be summed up in the following formula:
/* Bonus to be added to ContiScore (Percent_weight_loss*200 + Weight_loss) */
if (prev_end_weight > current_weight )
bonus = (prev_start_weight - prev_end_weight)*0.25 + (prev_end_weight - current_weight)*0.50;
else if (prev_start_weight > current_weight )
bonus = (prev_start_weight - current_weight)*0.25;
else
bonus = The_Zero_who_ate_too_much;
If you have not participated in previous contests, no bonus points for you. - Points will be awarded based on weight loss and body characteristics, and how linearly you lose the weight.
Please check http://mr-eman.homeftp.org/~diet/
for current point status. Highest point total wins the contest.
The formula is roughly (or exactly, depending on your definition):
ContiScore = (Percent_weight_loss*200 + Weight_loss) ;
Score = (ABS(ContiScore)+Bonus) ÷ Linear_Density * ABS(Weight_Slope_Correlation) ;
(Please note that by using absolute values in the formula, it is possible to get points by gaining weight.) - All participants are invited to the BFLG lunch at the Chinese buffet on Baldwin somewhere after the end of the contest, or if participants have health concerns regarding this location, we can choose a different venue. (Maybe the mall.) The date is tentatively for April 26, 2013.
